Title: Developing Community Partners to Support Increased Access to Cultural Diversity Access
Primary Track: 4-Medical Home
Keyword(s): Medical Home Training, Access, Partnerships

Abstract:

Many Medical Home and pediatric providers who serve low income and non English speaking families, face increasingly demanding work schedules and patient loads that limit their regular participation in hospital based professional trainings, Grand Rounds, and specialty conferences. Limited access and information to and for these providers often translates into minimized access and services for low income and culturally diverse families. This presentation will address one Center's experience (Project Cross Talks) in developing successful options for partnering with providers who serve low income, and culturally diverse families, (many of whom do not speak English fluently,) to continue to increase their skills and active participation in supporting equal access to early diagnosis, optimal intervention, support and services for all families whose baby has a hearing loss. Examples of agendas outlining specially designed provider trainings based on 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour or one-half day presentation venues, will be shared with conference participants. Video tape interviews will highlight one parent's perspective of how provider-patient miscommunication, based on a language barrier, resulted in significant delays in the early diagnosis and intervention process, as well as the parent's emotional response in the ensuing years. Parent information handouts, created and translated into various languages, will be available to participants to bring back to their centers, facilities, patients and community.
