Parent-to-Parent Support in a Clinic Based Setting: From Why to How

In recent years, interdisciplinary clinics have begun to utilize a clinic-based parent-to-parent support model. Sometimes known as ‘family consultants’ who are parents themselves, they serve in a non-medical role incorporated into the clinical setting to provide support to families. There are many benefits to including parent-to-parent support during a visit. For families, these may include: comfort and a sense of relief, connection to other resources, viewpoints that are holistic, and access to positive role models. There are some unique considerations and commitments by all team members that must be clearly understood in the planning and implementation of this support to create successful outcomes. This presentation will be presented by a panel of parents who have had the opportunity to serve in this role in different clinics, and will share strategies that both professionals and parents should consider in implementing elsewhere.

  • Understand the unique roles and responsibilities of parent-to-parent support in a clinic-based setting.
  • Learn how to implement techniques to build relational trust with professional colleagues in a clinic setting.
  • Explore challenges and positive outcomes of having a parent supporter on a clinic team.

Kim Reimann (Co-Presenter), Wyoming Families for Hands & Voices, kim.reimann@wyo.gov;
Kim Reimann is currently the Wyoming Families for Hands & Voices, Guide By Your Side (GBYS) Program Coordinator and is a Family Educator and Second Tester at CDC+ Audiology Clinic in Casper, Wyoming. She was the former assistant director of Wyoming Families for Hands & Voices from 2011 to 2015 before stepping down to work in other roles. The oldest of her three children, Gabrielle, was born with a moderate to moderately-severe bilateral sensorineural hearing loss, thus starting her on the path to what she does today. As a former educator and preschool director, Kim Reimann carried her love of education and helping others into her current role of serving families. Kim’s passion is working with parents and their children by engaging the circle of support between parents and professionals (physicians, audiologists, early interventionists etc.). She helps to empower parents by sharing her story of raising a child with hearing loss, supporting families by connecting them with appropriate information, resources, and networks so that families can make informed, educated decision to help their child reach their fullest potential. She never imagined that being a parent would lead to working with many different organizations to help children who are deaf and hard of hearing (D/HH) through connections with professionals, providing advocacy and support for families, and working to establish and maintain different programs for the benefit of children who are D/HH in Wyoming. Through the years, Kim has been grateful to be a part of the changes and growth of Wyoming Families for Hands & Voices and to work with so many amazing people.
