10 Things My Son Taught Me that I Didn’t Learn in My Audiology Program

Years of study and professional practice prepared me to understand the technical process of my son’s Newborn Hearing Screening and make informed decisions on his subsequent care. I was unprepared for the lack of knowledge about hearing loss diagnosis and management in the healthcare and early intervention system. There were many hurdles that I had to overcome by advocating for my son to get him the care he needs. This presentation will share ten things to help audiologists better understand the family experience with a child who is deaf plus so they can better serve families like mine.

  • Attendees will recognize 3 barriers to timely diagnosis and intervention for infants with complex medical needs and infer solutions to overcome these barriers.
  • Attendees will recall specific family to family supports that can aid families.
  • Attendees will engage in self-reflection to give examples of how their practice can be improved to meet the needs of families and children with complex medical needs.
