Quality Improvement Initiatives for Lost to Follow-Up Prevention

Over the last year, the Wisconsin Sound Beginnings EHDI program has implemented a variety of quality improvement initiatives for newborn hearing screening as we strive to meet the 1-3-6 guidelines for every baby in Wisconsin. In this session, participants will learn how a newly formed team (with three new employees and two tenured staff) have reduced their lost to follow-up rate through three key initiatives. Wisconsin Sound Beginnings will explore the importance of collecting accurate information, the options available for communicating that information both internally and externally, and improving the accountability for out-of-hospital providers, birth units, NICUs, and audiologists around our state. The presenters will share ways we improved tracking data over time, reports that were built to be shared with the organizations directly, and how we communicated feedback to those organizations about how staff were performing on meeting those 1-3-6 milestones. Participants will also get a glimpse of how we plan to move forward from here and what our future initiatives might be.

  • The participant will be able to list three areas of focus to consider when establishing a quality improvement initiative.
  • The participant will be able to implement one new quality improvement initiative at their own organization.
  • The participant will be able to identify four ways to communicate with out of hospital providers.

Presenters/Authors

Mandy Quainoo (Primary Presenter,Co-Presenter), Wisconsin Department of Health Services, amanda.quainoo@dhs.wisconsin.gov;
I live and work in Madison, Wisconsin. I started working with the state Department of Health Services in January of 2023 as the Newborn Screening Follow-through Coordinator. I follow up with birth units, NICUs, birth centers, midwives, audiologists, and families to make sure all babies born in Wisconsin are screened for blood, heart, and hearing differences. I am also the family delegate from Wisconsin to AMCHP, the Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs. Being the parent to a deaf son, I have been given the opportunity to support other families who have children recently diagnosed with a hearing difference. I received my undergraduate degree at UW-Madison in elementary education and later earned my master's degree in educational leadership and policy analysis. After ten years in education, I spent eleven years in the tech industry working as a project manager for a software company, which eventually brought me to the Newborn Screening program in Wisconsin.
