An Emerging Role for Parent-to-Parent Support within EHDI Care Coordination

The Follow Through Guide Project (FTG) has connected with over 1500 families in Texas who are at risk of loss-to-follow-up, identifying numerous barriers within the EHDI system, and demonstrating the effectiveness of parent-to-parent support at the earliest point in the continuum of care. While professionals certainly have the capacity to deliver information and follow up on care needs, there are characteristics unique to communication provided by parents that contributed to the success of the project. • Parents have credibility with other parents based on shared experiences. • Parents are accessible in ways that providers cannot be, both in terms of time and emotional availability. • Communication by parents is understandable, particularly for families who prefer Spanish. • Parents are to provide a “big picture” view of deafness and the myriad of issues related to raising a child who is deaf/hard of hearing. The implications of each of these features is explored in the context of the FTG project, with recommendations for integrating parent-to-parent support into care coordination for infant hearing healthcare. Barriers identified by families within the project are reviewed, as well as parent driven supports to address family and system challenges. The importance of carefully selecting and training professional parent Guides for such a role is emphasized, and a collaborative partnership between a Hands &Voices Guide By Your Side Program and a state EHDI program is described.

  • Participants will be able to summarize characteristics and training required for an effective parent guide.

Sarah Wainscott trains teachers of the deaf and speech-language pathologists at Texas Woman’s University, with an emphasis on language acquisition, auditory supports, and interdisciplinary collaboration. She is also the parent of two children who are deaf, and supports parent outreach and provider training for Texas Hands & Voices.
