Incorporating ASL into a Total Communication Program
The needs of young deaf and hard of hearing children are as diverse as ever; the programs that serve them need to be flexible, nimble, and creative to respond to the changing need. This presentation will focus on the experience of one preschool that incorporated American Sign Language into what was previously a simultaneous communication environment. The teachers will share strategies for providing access to both spoken English and ASL, evaluating and monitoring progress in each language, developing and maintaining strong deaf-hearing teams within the classroom, and involving paraeducators in the educational program. Participants will also have the opportunity to examine some of the challenges that persist in the current model and discuss possible solutions.

- Identify 3 features of an effective deaf-hearing team of teachers/paraeducators.
- State 3 challenges that persist in the current model and brainstorm possible solutions.

Louise Rollins has worked with d/hh children and their families for 15 years, primarily in birth-5 programs. She has broad experience as a teacher for a state school for the deaf and public school programs, working with children who are acquiring spoken and/or sign language, and participating in collaborative teams across Maryland. Michelle Gough, M.A., is a preschool teacher in Montgomery County Public Schools, Maryland. She taught at Kendall Demonstration Elementary School, New Mexico School for the Deaf, and Sidwell Friends School in Bethesda, Maryland for the last fifteen years. Michelle received her BA and MA degrees in Early Childhood Education and ASL/English Bilingual Deaf Education from Gallaudet University. With her passion for bilingual early childhood education, she believes in empowering deaf and hard of children with full access to rich language through play and exploration. She is a mother of two teenage boys who are Deaf and a CODA.
