Behind the X's and O's: Unilateral and Minimal Hearing Loss
Considerable challenges exist in the evaluation and management of unilateral and minimal hearing loss in the pediatric population. In addition, it can be difficult to ensure these children are receiving timely intervention services and that parents are aware of the possible difficulties that these children may have as they develop. How can we as healthcare providers and interventionist ensure we are doing our part to help these children? This presentation will review the current protocols in place at the University of Miami Children’s Hearing Program and University of Miami Debbie School for the evaluation and management of these children. While established evidence exists demonstrating the negative impact of unilateral and minimal hearing loss on speech and language development as well as academic performance, intervention is often delayed or overlooked in these children. This presentation will use case studies in order to generate discussion and identify various area of improvement in the management of children with unilateral and minimal hearing loss.
- 1. Review of the current literature on unilateral and minimal hearing loss and how this can impact a child’s overall development.
- 2. Describe the importance of translational research and reviewing objective and subjective findings when determining proper audiological management for children with minimal or unilateral hearing loss.
- 3. Review challenging diagnostic pediatric case studies and discuss potential opportunities for collaboration from the clinical and early intervention viewpoints.

Kari Morgenstein, AuD is an Assistant Professor at the University of Miami Ear Institute. She received her bachelor’s degree from Indiana University and her Doctorate in Audiology from the University of Florida. Dr. Morgenstein is the Director of the University of Miami (UM) Children’s Hearing Program. The UM Children’s Hearing Program is a unique, interdisciplinary program that focuses on providing early intervention and management for children with hearing loss. She has been published in several national and international journals and sits on various committees within the American Academy of Audiology.

Lynn W. Miskiel, M.A., CCC-SLP/A, LSLS Cert. AVEd, is an ASHA certified and Florida licensed speech-language pathologist and audiologist as well as a certified Listening and Spoken Language Specialist. She received her Bachelor’s Degree at the University of Colorado and her Master’s Degree at the University of Illinois. She has worked in the field of aural rehabilitation since 1988 and currently works at the University of Miami Debbie Institute (School) as the Director of the Auditory-Oral Education Program for children who are deaf and hard of hearing and as the Director of Ancillary Services, overseeing the therapy department at the Debbie School. Ms. Miskiel has presented nationally and internationally on auditory training, language, and speech development techniques for children who are deaf and hard of hearing. She co-edited with Kathleen Vergara the Miami Cochlear Implant Auditory and Tactile Skills Curriculum. She is active in local, state, and national professional organizations, serving in a variety of committee and leadership roles.
