0-3: The Diagnostic Years for Communication and Language Development
Communication and language development are often the primary focus for Parent Advisers working with families who have children that are deaf or hard-of-hearing. Following the guidance of informed choice, we offer families information on various opportunities for communication and language development. But how often do we return to this conversation and revisit the choices to ensure that the child and family's communication is growing and is successful? And what do we do if it is clear that the child is not showing success with the choice that was originally made? This presentation will review information on brain plasticity, communication opportunities, informed choice, and meeting the needs of young children and their families during these early diagnostic years of communication and language development. We will discuss critical period timelines, concerns about making changes, and strategies to increase the child's successful communication within the family unit.
- Identify the differences between a sensitive period and a critical period in a young child’s development
- Increase knowledge of the impact of brain plasticity on monolingual and bilingual language development in young D/HH children
- Understand the relationship of the following areas: language development, language assessments, parent empowerment, and early intervention goals

Mari Hubig has been a Deaf Education teacher for 25 years, and 20 of those years have been dedicated to working with families with children in early intervention services (birth to three). In addition to Deaf Education, Ms. Hubig also has a background in Primary Montessori education. She is currently the Birth-3 Outreach Specialist at the Statewide Outreach Center at the Texas School for the Deaf. She provides both local and statewide trainings and support to both teachers of the deaf/hard of hearing and to early interventionists working with families of young children who are D/HH.
