Making It Work: EHDI and UNHS Outsourcing in Hospitals
Hearing loss is the most common congenital birth defect affecting approximately 1 – 3 babies out of every 1,000 births. In order to diagnose potential hearing loss as early as possible, 46 states have mandated Universal Newborn Hearing Screening (UNHS). Hospitals may choose to complete the required newborn hearing screens themselves, but increasingly, hospitals are contracting with outside companies to run the newborn hearing screening program in their facility. While the contract for UNHS services is solely between the facility and the screening company, it is critical that the state Early Hearing Detection and Intervention program be aware of the screening situation and involved as the new company begins their program, particularly when the screening company may be new to the state. To support hospitals and new screening companies, the KY EHDI program developed a training curriculum for new screeners that discussed hearing screening protocols, JCIH best practices and risk factors. The training also discussed the state EHDI program history, applicable laws and regulations, data entry expectations and required data elements to be collected. This presentation will describe the process of developing and implementing the training, including identifying necessary content and key components for the screening staff.

Cathy graduated in 1985 with a BA in Biology. She taught high school biology and math for then moved to Child Welfare at Home of the Innocents for 6 years and then moved to DCBS in CPS Investigations. She worked in investigations, family court, adoptions, and with medically fragile foster children. She joined the EHDI program at the Commission for Children with Special Health Care Needs in September 2011. As the EHDI Health Program Administrator, she works within KY CHILD and CCSHCN’s database to ensure accuracy of data, assist families and providers with information and programming technical assistance. She has her Master’s degree in Social Work and 35 hours post Master’s work. She has also taught Research and Statistics at Kent School of Social Work and Social Work Practice at Spalding School of Social Work.
